A couple of words about the Amar
Mahal Hotel. First, it is very beautiful, nicely landscaped, and
the staff are very nice. But, hot water is a problem and there
is no heat. So, do come, but don't come in the winter. I left
with my driver around 9 AM and we headed to Khajuraho, about a
four hour drive. And what a drive it was! The roads were very
bad and in many place it was literally a one lane highway. Both
cars would have to put their wheels onto the shoulder to pass. A
little nerve-racking (probably a little easier than western
Ireland).
After arriving at the Clark Hotel, I took a quick rest and
went with my guide to the Western Group Khajuraho temples. These
temples are well-known for the erotic panels, and there were
plenty.
From Eyewitness Travel Guides India
The magnificent group of temples at Khajuraho, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, were built between the 9th and 10th centuries by
the Chandela dynasty which dominated Central India at the time.
The most impressive of the temples is the Kandariya Mahadev,
which represents the pinnacle of North Indian temple are and
architecture. It is remarkable for it grand dimensions, its
complex yet perfectly harmonious composition, and it exquisite
sculptural embellishment. Over 800 sculptures cover the temp,
depicting gods and goddesses, beasts and warriors, sensuous
maidens, dancers, musicians and, of course, the erotic scenes
for which the Khajuraho temples are famous.
