Some random thoughts ....

Bangkok traffic is tough, but drivers are amazingly polite and let each other in. I've had Thai food for every meal - very good. Everything is cheap, cheap, cheap. Dinner plus 2 beers is about $10. I get 5 free bottles of water in my frig each day. I haven't bought any gifts yet. The reclining Buddha is a must-do. The Skytrain is very easy to ride. Everyone is polite, although there are lots of smokers and smog.

I was up by 5 a.m. again. But, this time I needed to be. Today I'm headed to the Bridge on the River Kwai Tour.  My pick-up is at 6:10 a.m. We went in a mini-bus to a location outside of Bangkok. There we were picked up by a tour bus; 10 people were on the tour today.

After a stop for 'a toilet break and a beverage or a light snack', we headed 1 1/2 hours north east of Bangkok towards Kanchanaburi province.  Along the way, we learned the 'correct story' about the Bridge on the River Kwai. Over 30,000 Allied troops died building the 'Death Railroad', and over 100,000 Asian workers died. It was not as nice as the movie.

Our first tourist stop is the Death Railway Museum and the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. Both are very moving and worth the visit. The museum was very informative. The cemetery was well-kept.

Next, we went to the Bridge on the River Kwai. The bamboo bridge in the movie was removed before the end of the war. It was a pretty big tourist destination. Lots of things to buy here.

The next part of our tour was a railroad ride, which was very nice. Our tour guide got us good seats, and we had a wonderful ride to our next stop. This was part of the Death Railroad.

For lunch, we went to the River Kwai Village Resort. We had a very nice Thai lunch. Then, we went on a long boat ride - which was pretty darn cool. We all sat on the bottom of the boat.

The trip back to the hotel was very long, and Bangkok traffic was packed. On the way back, they showed us a documentary about the Death Railroad. Fairly depressing. The Japanese were very cruel to the prisoners. I listened to 'The End' by The Doors. Then, a little Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water to brighten up the trip. The Rio Carbon MP3 player is a lifesaver. My flight to Cambodia leaves at 7:30 a.m., so I'm getting up early again.

Another great day!
