| Finally,
off work for a couple of days and out of town for the weekend. The month
of September was a bear. I had one weekend off and I worked nearly 80
hours of overtime. Time to get away.
I went to DC for a Children's Data Sharing conference. I was invited because I had done there initial mock-up of the website for the group. Pretty simple, but that was the point. Wednesday, October 4th, 2000 My flight to Baltimore was fine and on-time. I had to take a train from the airport to DC. It only took about 30 minutes and a chatted with a guy from Houston. He was there as part of the Firestone litigation. We had a couple of beers at Capitol City Brewery once we got to Union Station in DC. After checking into the hotel, I walked around Georgetown for about an hour. Lots of people hanging out and having fun. Thursday, October 5th, 2000 Went to the meetings, had dinner with Warren, went to bed. Friday, October 6th, 2000 Warren showed the website at the meeting. Of course, everyone thought it was great. After the meetings, I changed hotels to the Hilton Garden Inn. It was a great location, only a few blocks away from the Whitehouse, and across the street from a Metro stop - very convenient. After checking in, I was off to a Washington Capitals hockey game. Having never been to the MCI Center, I got a little off track, but found it in plenty of time. My seats where right behind the goal, a very fun place to be. The Capitals got severely beaten, but I had a good time. Saturday, October 7th, 2000 The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum was my first stop of the morning. GO EARLY. There is always a line. If you haven't been, you should definitely go! The museum has four floors, and after spending over two hours on just one floor, I decided it was time to leave. There is just so much to see and read about. I will be returning soon. I was lucky enough to be in town for 'Taste of DC'. Many of the local restaurants had tents for you to buy food. I was also lucky enough to see Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for free. Great timing and a great time. The National Museum of American History was next on the list. This is one the places I hadn't had time in the past to visit. They had the Star-Spangled Banner, Dorothy's shoes, and a Tucker automobile. I wish I had a little more time, but that's the way it goes. Sunday, October 8th, 2000 I walked to the Lincoln Memorial early in the morning. I also stopped at the Vietnam and Korean Memorial. After that, I got on another train back to Baltimore and headed home. Another great trip, and as usual, not enough time.
