Happy New Year!

Mark and I packed the night before and just needed to do some last minute packing this morning. After cleaning up, we walked over to the De Lucia Restaurant for our free breakfast.  We ate some cereal and fruit.  After eating, Mark told our waitress "adios."  We left the hotel promptly at 7:30 a.m.  Our driver was on time, so off we went.  Mark thought that the De Lucia hotel clerk under charged us for the room, so he left him a note.  I'm glad to be leaving the De Lucia hotel.  Everyone was very friendly and courteous.  However, the accommodations were very basic.  Also, the room was paneled in cedar, making my sinuses act up.

It's off to the Lost Iguana Resort.  Before leaving Monteverde, we stopped by another hotel and picked up a Dutch group of six.  One of the guys spoke English and Spanish. Then, we have a one and a half hour bus ride before we get on the horses.

We met up with our tour guide. I was the only one that had experience riding a horse. Mark has been on a horse once or twice. The tour guide gave his instructions in Spanish. He spoke limited English, but was very nice and eager to please. He and his hermano (brother) kept an eye on everyone to make sure that we were safe. He led the way, and his brother followed behind. On occasion, some of the Dutch riders wanted to gallop. The tour guide let them. I stayed behind with the stragglers, including Mark. He was appreciative that I stayed with the “slow ones.” We did gallop occasionally. I wish I could have been behind Mark to see him.  The horses mainly trotted, so the ride was bumpy. Mark has the bruises to prove it. We rode the back roads.

We stopped and were able to see the volcano across the lake. Mark took some pictures. It was beautiful. On our break from riding, a sow came up. The sow was from a neighbor’s farm across the road. You’ll see her in the pictures. Bruno (yes that’s the dog’s name) tried to keep the sow away. It was quiet comical.

Mark’s horse was Carmello, and mine was called Adios. After the ride was over, a boat was waiting for us. Mark told the guide that he thought we’d have to wait for the boat. The guide said “cell phones.” It was funny. The tour guides’ cell phones would go off on the back trails. Everyone has a cell phone these days. The boat ride was fun, but wet. Our boat driver was also the guy who drove us to the Lost Iguana Resort.

We arrived at the Lost Iguana Resort (four stars) and checked in. It was about 2:00 in the afternoon. Mark had booked us a luxury suite. It was a corner room and was absolutely gorgeous. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. The room had a nice big bathroom and bar area to spread things out. It was clean. Wow. Oh, and the view was really great too. We had a balcony and could sit out there. Humming birds would come up and taste the flowers. It was really cool. The power went off for about two hours. We didn’t know it but that was a sign of things to come. The next day the power went off for a couple of hours and then came back on.
